Experiences of past volunteers:

Charline Bodin, Cultural Management Student, Paul Cézanne University, Arles, France.

“I arrived in mid-April for my university internship for cultural management and found myself
in the middle of the recent crisis. My experience as a volunteer in Arte Moris though
was absolutely great. It was not easy every day but it was full of surprises. I learnt more
than I expected and I finally found my place in this environment. Now I see Arte Moris both
as a wonderful place to learn and as a great family . I cannot imagine not to be in
touch with anymore. Arte Moris is definitely part of my life.”

Claudia Neupert, Bachelor of Arts student, has an Associate Degree in Arts and Printmaking at Universidad Catolica de Chile (Chile)

My experience with Arte Moris is powerful and wonderful. Throughout my stay in East Timor I have experienced such an enriching and powerful understanding of the way the East Timorese see art. The kids I teach are smart, funny and very, very talented. I love teaching and I like it even more because of my students, I couldn’t ask for a better experience. I just don’t want to ever leave Arte Moris, neither should you. (countessolivia@hotmail.com)

Samantha Pearson, student of Spanish and Portuguese literature at Cambridge University, U.K.

“I spent two months at Arte Moris teaching English and Portuguese. Everyone was really friendly and the classes were informal which gave me a good chance to find out more about the culture and history of East Timor. The project is also well respected in the local community so not only did I always feel safe there but I felt that my time was never wasted. It is also such a lively, crazy and creative place and I had a lot of fun going to the beach with
the guys, watching them drum and joining in some of the art workshops.”

Tim Steiner, Arte Moris Zürich (AMZH) representative, Switzerland.

“There is no place like Arte Moris. I fell in love with the country in 2004 and I keep coming back. I teach English when I’m there and find many other ways to contribute to the project. I also had the director Iliwatu and Tony, one of the students, sharing my apartment back in Switzerland for a month when we were organizing two exhibitions. In my visit in 2006 I was really impressed with how the students handled the IDP crisis. We need people who genuinely want to help the students and have skills to offer. For sure, it’s not a holiday camp but all the hard work is worth it.
